Michael Merlino, a Chicago-born filmmaker now based in Los Angeles, has garnered awards and recognition since his high school days, including honors from prominent festivals like the Chicago International Film Festival’s CineYouth and The All-American High School Film Festival. Notably, he secured a $10K grant from the Bahlsen National Film Competition.
During his time at DePaul University from 2020 to 2022, Michael concentrated on directing within the Film & TV program, displaying resilience during the pandemic by embracing unconventional learning methods beyond formal education. His hands-on approach expanded upon his skill sets, spanning writing, directing, acting, editing, and visual effects
Post-DePaul, Michael dedicated himself to editing, VFX, and producing the original soundtrack for his upcoming film, PINPOINT, slated for completion summer 2024. He has also collaborated with Artlist.io and empowered clients, such as DartZone Blasters and Re:Cognition Health, showcasing his talents as a freelance editor, creative director, and collaborator.
Michael's films often blend and subvert genres, delving into themes that resonate with the complexities of the contemporary generation. Raised in an era of accessible filmmaking equipment, education, and teamwork, he harnesses these tools to push the boundaries of traditional visual language.
Through his work, Michael aims to provoke thought on the nihilistic anxieties and dark humor of himself and Generation Z, while keeping an engaged and direct story at the forefront to ensure an accessible yet innovative experience for many.
